St Catherine’s Hospital

Luxury stays in the heart of Bath

Endowed to St John’s in 1444 as a perpetual gift, St Catherine’s Hospital was rebuilt in 1553 as an almshouse for ten people and rebuilt again in 1829. Narrow doorways and hallways ultimately made it unsuitable for older people with limited mobility. In 2008 an alternative use was found for it that would generate funding for St John’s charitable work.

With the kind agreement of the Charity Commission, the value of St Catherine’s Hospital was ring-fenced to be used to provide alternative almshouse accommodation elsewhere in the city of Bath. Then in 2018, this beautiful Grade II listed building was transformed into ten luxury apartments for short stays in Bath.

Situated just behind the Thermae Spa and only 50 metres from the Roman Baths, the ten one-bedroomed maisonettes and apartments all face into the original courtyard garden, creating a truly tranquil sanctuary in the heart of the city of Bath.

And just like the House of St John’s, St Catherine’s Hospital is run by our dedicated commercial trading subsidiary to directly generate funds that support our wide range of charitable work across Bath and North East Somerset.

People staying at St Catherine’s are not only enjoying a lovely stay in Bath, they are also helping to fund positive change within the local community at the same time. They’re helping disadvantaged younger people, older people, and those in financial crisis. It’s a place to stay with a social purpose.
